Rehearsals: Vocalist Part I

Welcome to our second installment of rehearsal tips as you practice for your competition. Weather you are a vocalist or dancer, you need to have good rehearsal traits to do well when you are on stage. Today we are talking to the vocal performers, but the information can also be carried over to dance. Next issue we will address rehearsal tips for dancers.

In our next few articles we are going to discuss all aspects of good rehearsal techniques to get you prepared for your big pageant. Pageant talent competition is as hard as it gets for performers. Not only do you have to participate and concentrate on Interview, Evening Gown and Swimsuit. You also have to go out there and win over the judges and audience with your performance skills. So have your talent competition totally rehearsed and perfect so as not to add worries during your competition. Here are some winning tips for vocalists.

VOCALIST

Where you practice for your competition, the location of your rehearsal, is just as important to your vocal workout as how much you practice. Make sure you rehearse in a place where you feel free to sing out -- without worry as to who might be listening. Church auditoriums, recital halls, vacant school classrooms, gymnasiums and garages are common practice areas. The key here is this is where you can be yourself!

1. Singing at gigs, recording sessions or band rehearsals are not practice. Make time for yourself to sing without the pressure of having to sound good. Find a rehearsal area where you can take chances and make mistakes during your own, private workout.

2. Before your practice session take a nice relaxing break in your day. Never go into a practice feeling rushed or impatient. This will affect your practice, which carries over to your performance.

3. During your practice time, go slowly and take time to really understand the vocal needs of your song. Hastiness is the #1 enemy of meaningful vocalizing.

4. If you vocalize for a half and hour everyday, you'll be surprised at how ready to sing you'll always be.
5. Train yourself to sing one or two notes higher than required in your performances. This insurance will allow you to relax on stage and feel more confidence in your performance.
